How to Make Great Coffee at Home and Save Money

by pirate johnny

We used to be the people that went to Starbucks every single morning for lattes or mint mochas on our way to work. Somehow, when Starbucks raised their prices in our area to over for a medium-sized drink, it just got to me. I started to think about how much we were really spending (2 of us x per day x 7 days per week...that was over per week before the tips we left!)
If you don't already have a good quality drip coffee maker, you'll need to acquire one. Once you have your coffee maker, you are ready to begin. Fill your coffee maker with filtered water for the desired number of cups that you'll be making. For my large mugs, I have found that I usually need about 3 cups (as measured in the coffee maker markings) for each mug of drip coffee that I will be making. If your coffee maker has its own water filter, you can fill it using tap water.
Now you will put a paper filter (white or unbleached both work equally well) in your coffee machine. Use the proper size as directed by your coffee maker's instruction manual. Most standard drip coffee makers require a #4 filter. Look for the Melita filters to go on sale at your grocery store and buy a few boxes when they do. Melita will sometimes also run coupons in the Sunday coupon sections. You can also buy store brand filters--these seem to be just as good as the Melita ones.

Now you are ready to add your coffee. You will want to buy good quality ground coffee to use--this is the
